Have you ever thought in such a way while having conversations with your iPhone girl Siri.
This woman claims to have voiced the original version of Siri, which appeared on the iPhone 4S back in October 2011.Let’s all say hi to Siri, Ohh I mean Susan Bennett!,67 years old Susan Bennett, a veteran voice actor, told CNN she has stayed silent about her role as Siri’s voice since she first learned about with the software’s launch in 2011.Susan who began voice work in the 1970s has spoken for countless commercials and phone systems. Likewise, she has also addressed travelers in Delta airport terminals and directions from GPS devices. They were her source of income until now.
She actually was hired by a company called Nuance Communications and was asked to record every possible sound in the English language. She worked 4 hours a day, five days a week and it was far from being easy the story tells. She had to read nonsense phrases such as “Militia Oy Hallucinate Buckram Okra Ooze” with military like precision. Then through a process known as concatenation the sounds were digitally stitched together to form words. The process was very difficult and most nights when Susan came home she barely spoke at night. She completed her assigment and Nuance actually called her for more work which she declined, preferring instead to do more creative voice work.She never knew the work she did for Nuance would end up on Apple’s IPhone until Oct. 4, 2011 when a fellow voice over artist playing around with the new IPhone recognized her voice as Siri!
You may probably assuming that Ms. Bennett is a very wealthy lady now that each and every IPhone has her voice on it. But no, Apple bought her work from Nuance directly and she did not have any rights to her voice so no additional payments were due her.
She did contact a lawyer who reviewed the contract but the only loop hole that he found was that there was no nondisclosure agreement with either Nuance or Apple. Ms. Bennett, the story says is a usually private person but has recently come out with the news and has started a side career as a public speaker. She has even been on late night, with David Letterman’s TV show.
Professionals who know her voice, have worked with her and represent her legally say she is Siri. And an audio-forensics expert with 30 years of experience has studied both voices and says she is "100%" certain the two are the same.
So, the next time you are yelling at Siri for giving you the wrong directions or not understanding what you are saying try to remember you are speaking to a real live person, Susan Bennett.
